Competing on analytics

Tuesday, 28 Aug, 2007

US academic Thomas H. Davenport is a Distinguished Professor of Information Technology and Management at Babson College. He recently co-authored a book, Competing on Analytics: The new science of winning, looking at leading US companies who are building successful competitive strategies around data-driven insights.

Dr Peter Catt from Soltius says that New Zealand companies should do the same and he has written a white paper about analytics to put Davenport’s conclusions in a local context.

Businesses collect and store more information than ever before, says Dr Catt, and there is a growing recognition among New Zealand companies that they should be implementing IT systems that can use that data to aid in decision-making. “32 percent of respondents in this year’s NZ IT Investments Intentions Survey plan to invest in analytical solutions, so the message is getting through.

“Davenport’s book is a useful starting point for any business manager wanting to know more about analytics.”
