DELTA Utility Services

Since being spun out from its parent electricity company in 1998 as an electricity management and maintenance business, DELTA experienced an extended period of evolution and growth as it rapidly expanded the range and diversity of its activities, both functionally and geographically.

To support its early operations, DELTA utilised the Olympic financial software linked to its parent’s core energy billing system. This supported all areas of the business from general ledger and payroll to job management and reporting.

The software met most of the company’s initial requirements, however as operations grew and the demand for information increased in complexity, particularly with regard to contracting and construction activities, it became increasingly evident that the system was unable to deliver all the support required.

Additionally, the ageing software had been tweaked and extended numerous times during its lifespan and there were a growing number of areas in which it was inadequate. The company could bend it to make it do what was required, however it was never really able to provide all the support needed, and there were growing concerns regarding the integrity of the system.

The DELTA structure is one of a series of stand-alone businesses operating co-operatively within a corporate group. The existing financial package was struggling to adequately deal with the cross-billing such a structure required.

After discussing these concerns with SAP partner Soltius, DELTA agreed to look at SAP Business All-in-One to determine whether it could meet its particular requirements.

“We were surprised that it was not as expensive or as complex to work with as we had initially thought,” said Mr Wilson. “After a comprehensive review, inclusive of site visits, we opted to go with SAP Business All-in-One.”

Livestock Improvement Corporation

Growth is one of the signs of success. With growth in size comes growth in data, which means that data in a SAP system needs to be regularly copied to non-productive systems.

For LIC, copying these systems was disruptive, demanding a production shutdown of about 13 hours. This was compounded by the delete on the acceptance system as well as the insert and the post-configuration, making the full interruption last up to nine days. NDA Group

NDA Group is a New Zealand based group of companies which is a world leader in the fabrication of stainless steel process vessels and heat exchangers for industry, and the provision of other specialist products and services to key markets around the world.

The Group’s companies design, manufacture and service products for a wide range of process industries including the dairy, wine, brewing, chemical, mining, pulp and paper, pharmaceutical and food and beverage sectors. Headquartered in Hamilton, the Group has annual revenue of approximately NZ$200m, with multiple New Zealand sites as well as significant operations in Australia, China and the US.

Background

After a sustained period of growth that included the acquisition of a number of companies, NDA Group had multiple systems running across its six divisions.

NDA Group’s Chief Information Officer, Mark McMorran, said that although some of the solutions were still adequate on their own, NDA had identified risks in taking no action. By the beginning of 2008, NDA had added a number of new companies to their group and decided the timing was right to conduct a new ERP selection process.

With NDA expecting further growth, a major requirement was scalability to ensure the system could be expanded and rolled out to any new companies acquired by the group.

A number of solutions were shortlisted and assessed based on total cost of ownership, scalability and their fit for an engineer-to-order fabrication business. While all of the shortlisted products met NDA’s requirements to varying degrees, SAP Business All-in-One was judged to be the strongest as a complete package. Soltius was selected as the implementation partner largely based on their experience implementing the solution in the New Zealand mid-market.
